It’s situated just outside of the centre of Sheffield, on the top of the hill surrounded by green space. The key inspiration to the scheme was movement, both in a conceptual sense, connecting to the vigorous action of cycling but also literally, understood as providing an undisturbed circulation through the building. To contrast, we used the idea of ‘pause’ to bring out the main function of the project- the bike storage and it’s maintenance. The café is situated on the upper level also as a ‘pause’ moment of the scheme and opens up to the urban view of the city.
arboREAD COMMUNITY LIBRARY
The project is community- aimed and provides various reading spaces integrated with the existing trees found on the site in Ropewalks, Liverpool. The building wraps around and encloses the trees, blurring the boundary between the interior and exterior. It provides outdoor public space, full of greenery and takes it into the interiors creating an unusual space filled with plants. The aim was to make the building accessible and fully imbedded in its context, responding by form and materiality, to improve social aspect of the area.
JUST TRUST co-housing
The project is encouraging trust and close relationship with neighbours in a diverse community of Burngreave in Sheffield. It provides housing for families and living spaces for the youth in the area based on the co-housing idea which is appropriate financially to the area. The scheme provides a youth common room and cookery skill sessions for the youth with a possibility to sell their produce in a special shop. The residents benefit from the scheme by sharing and storing appliances in the wall of tools and a shared kitchen with a generous courtyard.
