P1 – Observatory

Joint project with Emma Huxtable

“‘Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?’ Pointless really… ‘Do the stars gaze back?’ Now that’s a question.” – Neil Gaiman

This observatory intends that the experience be fully immersed in so that any knowledge gained is about yourself and those with whom you choose to watch the stars. This is explored through two stages: a public ‘performance’ in the theatre, exploring the importance of time and place; and the ‘performance’ of the stars themselves in secrecy of hidden pods, creating space in which conversations  may happen which may not otherwise or elsewhere.

P2  – Theatre

hello

“Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future, rather than just waiting for it.” – Augusto Boal

Expression is a theme which theatrics embodies. How then, can a theatre design for a city silenced in its past, find a new way to express its city and help it take the next steps in its journey? This project aims to provide a stage for the artists of the Northern Quarter to express themselves, and a stage for the ‘improper’ art of cabaret in a district which is itching to tell the world all about Manchester.

P3 – Housing

“Modern life demands, and is waiting for, a new kind of plan, both for the house and the city.” – Le Corbusier

‘Home’ is a very personal thing; a feeling, a memory, a person. This project looks to sensitively disrupt the idea of a home being a specific place. It aims to design housing which feels like home for a given period of time but whose purpose is clear enough that the inhabitant recognises when it no longer suits them and will choose to move out, on their own accord.
