Design concept

Higger Tor has a number of views to capture: the picturesque panoramic landscapes, the dynamic site geology and of course the undisrupted view of the sky. The concept for the project developed from this, with the aim of capturing and framing these views by considering them as layers. The user should be connected to these layers through using the building, for example, a void throughout the building could connect user to the ground and to the sky.
Precedents that helped the development of the concept of layers were the Link Shelf by Studio Hausen, and a Cat Shelter by Standard Architecture and Design. From here, sketches and sketch models were created to develop the idea of stacked spaces that linked to their surroundings.
