Cohousing is a way of life in which residents get to know their neighbours and enjoy a real sense of community. Located in Burngreave, Sheffield, this housing scheme aims to tackle the sense of loneliness that is prevalent among the elderly by creating an inter-generational cohousing scheme that encourages a more social way of life. Other than their own private home, each household benefits from shared spaces and facilities that enrich their living experience.

The façade of the community kitchen is capable of unfolding to completely open up to the street and the opposing courtyard . This allows a physical expansion of the interior space, encouraging the visitors to ‘spill-out’ on to the streets for maximum interaction. this transformability also serves to maintain a comfortable microclimate within the structure through passive means.
