CYCLE CENTRE

Site South Street Park is directly behind the train station with an interesting sloppy contour. The purpose that people would park or rent a bike from the cycle centre there would be to catch a train or just arrive. So my initial idea is to make the architecture obvious to the station. Later I found that in order to climb from the first level to the second level of the slope we have to ride all the way to the side junctions and go back to the centre again or use the stairs through the middle, which for me is quite a long way. Surprisingly I found that people actually walk straight onto the slope and a trace of footpath formed by them. So my idea is pushed forward to how my architecture as a cycle centre can also link this interesting landscape of the site. So a spiral ramp connecting two levels is designed and a central core is formed to accommodate the services and toilet spaces.

REVIVAL THEATRE

The site is bonded by series of terraced houses, only one facade is facing Darnall high street. The analysis of No.52 inspired me that alongside with the advantage of the public transportation, the design of the front facade should be standing out to attract people who are not only local but also from the city centre. With a multicultural background,  the theatre at Darnall would be a magic tool to tight the relationship of the different societies and a starter to revival of this descending community. Looking back into the history of Darnall, its industrial background attracted me. Darnall was originally a piece of agricultural land and was raised by its glass and steel works during the industrial period. But later the glass work was removed and replaced by residential housing. From there, the industrial environment was gradually losing, many betting, haircut and off licence stores dominated the image of Darnall. Local population consists with mainly Bangladesh and Pakistani and has been there second or third generations already. So that the picture of the glory industrial period does not even exist in there memories plus the worldly goods obscured this fact. I want to use this opportunity to use my architecture as form of theatre to remain local people the industrial history of Darnall.

‘ENTERPRISE INCUBATOR’

The site N1 is setting closely to the Sum Studios, Anns Grove Primary School and Heeley city farm, perfectly allowing the maximum goal of my housing scheme which ties these three main components of Heeley together. Building onto my initial idea, I investigated into the Heeley city farm. The vegetable and fruit grow under the protection of the greenhouse inspired me that can the start-up entrepreneurs be seen as these plants, initially very weak but grow (their business) nicely inside the ‘incubator’. Following the natural of the site, I designed a glass roof structure covering a semi-underground communal space between two lines of the housing units to form a united complex. The space is very open towards the public in order to form a welcoming environment but also gives the privacy to the house keepers by separating the public and private circulations. The shaded area is planted as a ‘winter garden’ like space which works well with environment and sustainability.
