YEAR 2 PORTFOLIO

IN MY SECOND YEAR AT THE SHEFFIELD SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE I HAVE UNDERTAKEN THREE PROJECTS, EACH OF WHICH HAD UNIQUE REQUIRMENTS AND VARIOUS CHALLENGES. ENGAGING WITHIN THESE PROJECTS I HAVE ADVANCED MY ARCHITECTUAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS, WHILST ALSO LEARNING TO PUSH MY IDEAS FURTHER WITHOUT THE FEAR OF TAKING RISKS. THROUGH THE AID OF A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES INCLUDING HAND DRAWING, MODELLING AND COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN, I HAVE DEVELOPED MY DESIGNS AND REFINED MY OWN PERSONAL STYLE.

PROJECT 1: OBSERVATORY

HIGGER TOR, PEAK DISTRICT

IN COLLABORATION WITH ELOISE PIPER

DESIGNING AN ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY ON HIGGER TOR, A REMOTE SITE IN THE PEAK DISTRICT. AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE SITE WITH AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE WAS CRITICAL TO THIS PROJECT, AS A ‘THRESHOLD’ THEME WAS TO BE IDENTIFIED. DUE TO THE VARIOUS CHANGING TEXTURES BETWEEN ROCKS, GRASS AND PATHWAYS IT WAS DECIDED THAT OUR OBSERVATORY WOULD SIT ABOVE THIS ‘THRESHOLD’ CHANGE OF TEXTURES. THE OBSERVATORY PROVIDES VISITORS WITH VAST VIEWS OF THE PEAK DISTRICT, A BIRD WATCHING PLATFORM, AND AREAS FOR BOTH STAR AND PLANET OBSERVATION.

PROJECT 2: COMIC BOOK LIBRARY

ANCOATS, MANCHESTER

DESIGNING A LIBRARY WITHIN THE URBAN CONTEXT OF ANCOATS MANCHESTER, WITH THE AIM TO  REINTERPRET THE LIBRARY OF THE 21ST CENTURY. THROUGH MY URBAN ANALYSIS I DECIDED TO DESIGN A COMIC BOOK LIBRARY, THAT WILL NOT ONLY ATTRACT COMIC BOOK ENTHUSIASTS  BUT ALSO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THE LIBRARY GUIDES VISITORS INTO THE WORLD OF COMIC BOOKS AND  THROUGH THE COMIC BOOK AGES, STARTING FROM THE GOLDEN AGE TO THE MODERN AGE OF TECHNOLOGY.

 PROJECT 3: REFUGEE HOUSING

BURNGREAVE, SHEFFIELD

DESIGNING A HOUSING SCHEME WITHIN THE MULTICULTURAL RESIDENTIAL AREA OF BURNGREAVE, SHEFFIELD WITH THE AIM TO CREATE HOUSING AND AN ADDITIONAL COMMUNAL AREA FOR A SPECIFIC DOMESTIC GROUP. THROUGH MY NEIGHBOURHOOD STUDY I DECIDED TO FOCUS ON HOUSING FOR REFUGEES. THE HOUSING SCHEME OF WHICH I HAVE DESIGNED EMBODIES THE REFUGEES MEMORIES OF HOME,  WHILST ALSO PROVIDING A COMMUNAL COMMERCIAL AREA, SOCIAL AREA, DIRECT PLAYGROUND CONNECTIONS AND A SPACE FOR REFLECTION WITHIN THE MEMORIES MUSEUM.
