Initial Design

When walking down the main high street of Heeley it’s hardly recognisable as a high street – there is nothing aim towards and no architecturally considered outdoor community space. However, with it’s enthusiastic residents and proximity to Sheffield City Centre it certainly has potential. This housing scheme is driven by creating connections. I feel there is particular desire to reconnect different demographics in the community – with over 65% of residents being 65 and over, the large ageing population suggests an elderly housing project. However based on opinions gathered around Heeley I decided to form a mixed tenure community housing project consisting of 5 3-bed dwellings designed for young families and 8 1-bed bungalows with a common house which also has guest rooms. I also wanted to design for the rest of Heeley too, so I have extended and reconnected the existing high street with shop units on the lower ground of Gleadless Road.
