P1 WALKING PROJECT

THE BRIEF FOR THIS PROJECT ASKED US TO PRODUCE BOTH A PRACTICAL AND PERSONAL RESPONSE TO A PARTICULAR ACTIVITY, IN THIS CASE WALKING. THE SCHEME HAD TO PROVIDE A PLACE FOR SOMEONE TO REST AFTER A LONG DAY OF WALKING WHERE THEY MIGHT HAVE A VIEW BACK ALONG THE PATH THEY HAVE WALKED SO FAR, OR SHARE A MEAL AND A STORY FROM THEIR ADVENTURE WITH OTHER HIKERS.

THE PARTICULAR SITE WE WERE PROVIDED WAS SITUATED ON THE BORDER OF THE BROCKETT BOOTH PLANTATION ON THE SIDE OF BACK TOR, ONE OF A SERIES OF PEAKS SURROUNDING CASTLETON, LOCATED IN THE PEAK DISTRICT.

THE SCHEME STARTED OFF AS A SERIES OF SMALLER RESTS FOR SMALL GROUPS OF HIKERS BUT OVER THE COURSE OF THE PROJECT THE SHELTERS EVOLVED INTO A SINGLE UNIT AS ILLUSTRATED BY THE DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVES.

THE PLANS SEPARATE THE SCHEME OUT INTO THREE FLOORS WITH A FINAL PLAN TO SHOW THE INTERESTING ROOF DESIGN WHICH CAME ABOUT BECAUSE OF THE SEPARATION OF SPACES TO BREAK UP THE THRESHOLD FROM OUTSIDE TO INSIDE.

THE SECTION IS CUT TO SHOW THE ACTIVITIES THAT MIGHT TAKE PLACE IN EACH SPACE AND IS NOT A CUT STRAIGHT ACROSS THE PLAN. THE STEEP TOPOGRAPHY CAN CLEARLY BE SEEN AND BEST SHOWS WHY LARGE WINDOWS ARE USED TO CREATE THE FEELING OF JUTTING OUT INTO THE VALLEY WHILE INSIDE THE CABINS.

THESE EXTERIOR VIEWS OF THE FINAL SCHEME JUST GIVE A FINAL IMPRESSION OF WHAT THE FINISHED SCHEME MIGHT LOOK LIKE, AS WELL AS STARTING TO CONSIDER THE MATERIALITY AND ILLUSTRATE THE USES OF EACH SECTION.

P2 THEATRE PROJECT

THE BRIEF FOR P2 WAS TO PRODUCE A PROPOSAL THAT WOULD REFLECT THE HISTORY OF THE THEATRE AS A PLACE OF CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE, AS A PLACE TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER OVER A SKILL, WHERE THE PRODUCTION AND SHOWCASING OF A TYPE OF THEATRE MIGHT ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY INTERACTION AND POSSIBLY GIVE THE PEOPLE IN THE AREA A SKILL THEY CAN BE PROUD OF. THE SECOND PART OF THE BRIEF WAS TO PRODUCE AN URBAN FACADE THAT MUST REFLECT THE SPIRIT OF THE AREA WHILE BEING EYECATCHING AND ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANT.

OUR SITE WAS IN DARNAL WHICH IS A HALF HOUR BUS JOURNEY FROM THE CITY CENTRE, THE AREA ORIGINALLY BUILT UP AROUND THE LOCAL STEEL MILL IN THE INDUSTRIES HAYDAY BUT IS NOW MAINLY JUST HOUSING AND A COLORFUL ARAY OF SMALL CORNER SHOPS AND FAST FOOD OUTLETS. THE SITE ITSELF WAS PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH AS IT WAS SURROUNDED ON THREE SIDES AND NEEDED TO ALLOW PEDESTRIAN ACCESS AT EITHER SIDE TO GET TO THE HOUSES ABOVE THE SURROUNDING SHOPS.

THESE ARE A FEW OF THE KEY DEVELOPMENTAL IMAGES WHICH REALLY HELPED TO FIGURE OUT THE SCHEME AS THE PROJECT WENT ON, BEING A PUBLIC BUILDING KEEPING THE FEEL OF THE DESIGN IN MIND ALL THE WAY THROUGH SEEMED IMPORTANT AS IT WOULDNT BE OPEN TO CUSTOMIZATION AT ANY TIME IN THE SAME WAY THE FAMILY HOME WOULD BE.

THE FACADE DESIGN TOOK UP MOST OF THE PROJECT TIME IN THE PROJECT AND THERE ARE STILL THINGS THAT WOULD CHANGE GIVEN MORE TIME, STARTING OFF AS A POMPIDOU STYLE PIPE FACADE AND DEVELOPING INTO A MORE AFFORDABLE HOLLOW TUBE FACADE THAT WOULD REFLECT THE ACTIVITIES GOING ON IN THE FRONT, AMPLIFYING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PRE SHOW ACTS.

THESE DIAGRAMS SHOW SOME OF THE SMALL FEATURES OF THE DESIGN AND HOW THEY MIGHT WORK TO IMPROVE THE SHOWS, THE INITIAL MOVE IN THE DESIGN WAS TO SINK THE STAGE DOWN INTO THE GROUND TO GAIN EXTRA HEADROOM FOR ACROBATS WITHOUT MAKING THE BUILDING LOOM OVER THE STREET.

THE EXPERIENTIAL DRAWINGS AND RENDERS TRY TO SHOW WHAT THE SCHEME MIGHT LOOK LIKE WHEN FINISHED, ESPECIALLY TRYING TO SHOW THE INDUSTRIAL FEELING THE SCHEME TRIES TO CREATE AS WELL AS SOME OF THE ROOMS IN USE.

P3 HOUSING PROJECT PROJECT

FOR P3 WE WERE CHALLENGED TO DESIGN HOMES FOR FAMILIES AND ANOTHER DOMESTIC GROUP OF OUR CHOOSING, ALL OF THE HOUSES HAD TO BE ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY DIFFICULTIES WHICH MEANT INCLUDING LIFTS IN MOST CASES. THE DESIGNS WOULD BE VALUED FOR BEING AS GREEN AS POSSIBLE, THE RICHNESS OF THE INTERNAL ENVIRONMENTS FOR THE DWELLERS INSIDE AND STRATEGIES TO CREATE AND MAINTAIN A CLOSE COMMUNITY, NOT JUST WITHIN THE SCHEME BUT ALSO WITH AN ATTITUDE TO THE WIDER AREA.

THE MANIFESTO BRIEF WAS GIVEN TO US BEFORE WE STARTED DESIGNING AND SO IT QUICKLY BECAME OUTDATED, BECOMING APPARENT THAT THE SCHEME PLANNED DURING THE MANIFESTO WOULD NOT BE APPROPRIATE OR SERVE THE NEEDS OF THE RESIDENTS AS WELL AS PLANNED WHEN PUT NEXT TO THE P3 BRIEF AND THE PARTICULAR SITE.

THE SITE WE WERE GIVEN IN HEELEY WAS FAIRLY SIZABLE AND HAD MORE OPPORTUNITIES THAN SOME OF THE OTHER SITES, BEING WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF MOST OF THE NEARBY FACILITIES SUCH AS THE FARM WITHOUT BEING CLOSE ENOUGH TO DISRUPT ANY OF THEM. THERE ARE SEVERAL NICE VIEWS OUT ACROSS SHEFFIELD FROM THE SITE AND A LOCAL PUB WHICH HOSTS AN ANUAL MUSIC FESTIVAL WHICH IS QUITE POPULAR.

THE PLANS SHOW THE FINAL ITERATIONS OF THE PLANS INCLUDING THE PLAN FOR THE PARK AREA IN THE CENTER OF THE SITE. THIS WOULD BE A NATURE BANK CULTIVATING NATIVE PLANTS, TREES, AND FUNGI, MAKING IMPORTANT ENVIRONMENTAL USE OF SPACE BUT ALSO BEING EDUCATIONAL WHILE BEING ENGAGING AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING TO THE RESIDENTS.

THESE PLANS SHOW MORE SPECIFICALLY THE LAYOUT OF EACH DWELLING AS WELL AS WHAT THE INDIVIDUAL ROOM LAYOUTS WOULD BE LIKE WITHOUT THE RENDER TO GET A BETTER IDEA OF THE SPACES.

THE SECTIONS MOST ACCURATELY ILLUSTRATE THE SCHEME, HOW IT WORKS, FEELS AND WOULD HOPEFULLY BE A PLEASANT COMMUNAL PLACE TO LIVE, AS WELL AS PLAYING AN IMPORTANT AND INTERESTING ROLL IN THE WIDER COMMUNITY.

THESE FINAL IMAGES SHOW MOMENTS FROM AROUND THE SCHEME FROM A HUMAN PERSPECTIVE AS WELL AS A SUMMARISING CAD RENDER OF THE SCHEME AS A WHOLE ON SITE.
