Building form

Building form

The form of the building developed from the concept of moments of energy breaking out, whilst maintaining scale that compliments the site. Key precedents include Dovecote Studio by Haworth Tompkins and 192 Shoreham Street by Project Orange. The form of the music venue emulates the terraces in Sharrow, with the entrance on the corner. Interjecting this space is the performance area, which can be seen from the front and back of the venue as well as from the outside where it cantilievers over the pavement.

Using Audacity, the soundwave of ‘Common People’ by Pulp was examined in order to develop the facade. The soundwave was simplified, and made into a softer shape. Following this, fold lines were marked onto the soundwave where it could be wrapped around the building. This formed the main sculptural shape.
The original soundwave lines would be scored into the copper, and neon white lights would be placed within them to light up the building at night.
